Ever wonder why some women in their 40's and beyond look 10-15 years younger? Well as a woman approaching my 40's, I am here to tell you sunscreen is a MUST for fighting the signs of aging and reducing your chances of getting skin cancer. Not only should you apply sunscreen in the summer or when you go on vacation, but all year round. In a new study, Australian researchers report that people who apply sunscreen everyday show 24% less skin aging compared to participants who only used sunscreen part of the time. The study, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, looked at 900 people under 55 and discovered those regularly using sunscreen were less likely to have increased skin aging after 4.5 years — even those in middle age. According to Dr. Fusco, a dermatologist in private practice in New York City, the lifetime risk of developing invasive melanoma is 1 in 55. Daily use of sunscreen can greatly decrease your chances. When applying the sunscreen be sure to get all exposed areas of your body. The areas that are most likely to be missed are the tips of the ears, the backs of the hands and don't forget the lips! ( Use a chap stick or lip gloss with sunscreen for your lips.) Applying sunscreen is one important step you must add to your daily routine when getting ready in the morning! Not only will it keep you looking youthful, but it just may save your life. When choosing your sunscreen look for a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 or higher. There are many to choose from including lotions and sprays. Choose a lighter sunscreen for your face and decollete. Choose a separate sunscreen for your body. Some people prefer the spray on lotion because it goes on quicker and has a lighter feel to it. Try a few different ones until you find the one that is just right for you. Here are my favorites: For face and decollete I use Mary Kay Time-wise age fighting moisturizer with SPF 30. For the rest of my body I use Coppertone water babies quick cover spray SPF 50. Hope this information was helpful! Remember when we take care of ourselves, we are able to take care of the ones we Love! Xo Laura Marie
